Recipe for Machine Learning Applications: Getting Started

Machine learning (ML) applications don't have to be the province of hard-to-find data scientists working on esoteric, custom applications. SaaS-delivered ML applications can hide the data science behind traditional and well-understood GUI’s and API’s. Of six core tasks to manage a machine learning application, enterprises need to focus on three one-time tasks to bootstrap the application.

The Vital Role of Edge Computing for IoT: 2016 Update

Wikibon confirms our previous conclusions that Edge computing will be a vital component of IoT, and the cost benefits and business benefits of using a Hybrid IoT Model will increase in time for most IoT environments. This research looks at some classes of IoT where that there will be greater use of centralized cloud, but still concludes that for almost all IoT cases some Edge pre-processing and data reduction will reduce the overall cost of IoT. In most IoT cases, moving the processing to the data will result in significantly greater function and lower costs, with the requirement for more complex distributed database, time-series database, software.

Enterprise executives with responsibility for implementing a long-term strategy for IoT should ensure that the architecture they adopt is a full IoT hybrid cloud solution, capable of managing, storing, processing, protecting and deleting 95% of data at the Edge today, and about 99% of data at the Edge by the end of the strategic project.

Next-Generation Infrastructure Consolidation – Going Beyond Server Virtualization

Architecting data centers to satisfy the growing demand for high performance is challenging – primarily because the existing technology is running out of gas. This will require IT professionals to adopt new approaches for solving these demanding requirements.
New approaches to advancing overall system performance must be studied and applied whenever possible. Server SAN, which moves storage closer to processors without giving up shared data access, is one advance. Deploying flash-based storage devices is another, especially in situations that demand either predictable database performance or large numbers of live copies. Finally, new technologies for increasing I/O parallelism such as DataCore's Parallel IO can amplify the benefits of Server SAN and flash storage.

Industrial IoT and the Edge

Industrial IoT, the largest segment of the Internet of things (IoT) with the highest potential value, will require a deep integration between modern IT (Information Technology) and OT (Operations Technology). Modern IT technologies, to be truly extensible to OT, will need a hybrid cloud approach, with by far the majority of data and processing residing at the so-called "Edge". Architectures and software written by industrialists for industrialists, such as GE Predix, are showing how that can work.

The Power of Integrated Big Data Innovation, Part 2: Impact of Packaging on Time-To-Value

In the big data domain, businesses are trying to solve complex problems with complex and novel technology -- and often failing. Simplifying the packaging of big data technologies will streamline big data pilots and accelerate big data time-to-value. CIOs looking to establish differentiating big data capabilities need to consider Single Managed Entities to help solve the complexity problem.

Positive Early User Feedback for Oracle M7 Technology

Oracle M7 technology is meeting or exceeding the announcement performance claims against previous generation. Even taking very conservative assumptions, the business case for migration from T5 to T7 servers is good.
Wikibon concludes that for Oracle software and the servers they run on, the adoption of M7 technology (and T7 server technology) is best practice for these high application and software value workloads.

Real-time Recovery Architecture as a Service

For enterprise executives trying to achieve aggressive RPO and RTO SLAs , Wikibon believes that batch backup appliances (PBBAs) will give way to real-time, continuous data protection systems that aggressively support very large memory application memory. Practitioners requiring close to RPO zero and aggressive RTO SLAs should plan for an integrated data protection approach that effectively eliminates the concept of storage-led backup and shifts thinking to a application-led virtual point-in-time recovery model. The database and file system vendors will be the predominant suppliers of this technology, and understanding their roadmaps and commitment to support application-led recovery strategies is crucial to both database and data protection technology selection.

Questions for #CxOChat: Communicating to Boards on Cyber Security

On May 12, 2016 at 12 Noon EDT, several CxOs will gather to discuss how to best communicate to Boards of Directors on the topic of cyber security. Has a failure = fire mentality led organizations to “sandbag” the threat? Is security a shared responsibility across the business or does it fall on the shoulders of a few security gurus? How should CxOs be changing the way they communicate about cyber in the digital age?
